Advance Mahogany Bottom & Solid wood Maple Cap Arched Top. Fit for DIY Electric Guitar Project
DIY your own like electric guitar , Hand selected nice grain wood, Bolt on / Set in Style
Well, this is about the 5th kit guitar I have tackled and it threw some challenges my way for sure. First off, it would be nice if the company sold a compatible neck to use with this body either together with the body or separately. Maybe they do as of the writing of this review? I bought an inexpensive but nice looking neck from a different seller on Amazon called the Generic Store but it needed A LOT of modifying before fitting for glue up. I really wish I had spent more time on this process as the fit was off and I now have the bridge bottomed out in order to get a "playable" guitar. There are noticeable gaps underneath the fretboard where it overlies the body on both sides. Take your time and move slowly with any fitting modifications with the neck or neck joint. You will also need to drill the bridge and tailpiece holes which turned out to be a bit trickier than I thought. My advice? Measure 3 times, then practice on scrap wood, then measure again before drilling. I actually put too extreme an angle on the bridge and decided to put a dowel in and redrill which I am glad I did but was of course, more work due to rushing and not taking my time in preparation. This was also my first sunburst and I stupidly taped off the edges to get the darker cherry color border instead of just carefully spraying the edge. It came out OK, but everytime I look at it, I see the tape lines which was just stupid. The routing channels for all wiring were similar to USA LPs, rectangular shaped and provided plenty of room for Gavitt cloth covered wiring throughout. The finished guitar weighed under 8lbs which is amazing for a LP, but note that this body is slightly thinner than a Made in USA LP. Maybe similar to Epiphone size? The maple top was 2 pieces, and not center joined. The mahogany back was two pieces and center joined, however, for some reason this joint became really apparent (opened up slightly?) after finishing, causing a slight ridge about 2 inches long near the top of the joint. I recommend Guyker hardware (bridge, tuners and tailpiece), Bourns 500K pots (long shaft), and Artec humbuckers which are all fairly inexpensive but offer good value and higher quality than usual. I would not put premium money into this body. All that said, you cannot really beat this body for the money. It is the only set neck, solid maple topped body I have seen at this price range and I really did learn a lot from this build. The guitar rings like a bell, has great sustain, and a tone that satisfies both clean and dirty. I am also using it too practice some relic skills. 4 stars.
